You can use vegetable oil in an emergency—but it’s not recommended.
While it may quiet a squeaky hinge briefly, vegetable oil causes problems over time and is a poor substitute for proper lubricants.
Vegetable oil oxidizes and thickens as it ages. This creates a sticky residue that:
Attracts dust and dirt
Increases friction over time
Makes squeaks come back worse
Being organic, vegetable oil can:
Develop unpleasant odors
Break down and gum up the hinge
It lacks the additives needed to:
Reduce metal-on-metal wear
Protect against corrosion
Stay in place under repeated movement
Use vegetable oil only if:
You need a temporary fix
No proper lubricant is available
You plan to clean and re-lubricate soon
If you do use it, apply one tiny drop, then wipe off all excess.
Silicone spray – Clean, non-greasy, long-lasting
White lithium grease – Excellent for metal hinges
PTFE (Teflon) spray – Low friction, dust-resistant
Mineral oil (non-food)
Paraffin wax (rub on hinge pin)
Petroleum jelly (small amount)
Avoid cooking oils whenever possible.
Wipe the hinge clean (remove dust and old residue)
Apply lubricant to:
Hinge pin
Knuckles
Open and close the door several times
Wipe away excess
